Persuasive Essay due Tuesday. Topics listed in week two instructions. Here is the rubric:

Journal: What is the hardest thing you ever had to do?
Grammar: Read p. 270, "Using Commas with Compound Sentences"
Do: 270, 1-25. You do not need to write out the whole sentence, just the word before and after the comma. For example, in number one: "fire, for"
Literature: "The Man to Send Rain Clouds" by Leslie Marmon Silko, pp 590-595
Read the story and answer the questions below (my questions) in your own words and with your own ideas.
1. What is the setting of this story?
2. Who has died?
3. Where is he found?
4. Why don't the men tell the priest that they have the old man's body in the truck?
5. Why do the men want the priest to sprinkle holy water on the old man's body?
6. Why do you think that the Indians did not have the old man taken to the priest for Last Rites?
7. Is the burial done Indian-style or Catholic-style? How can you tell?
8. Why do the men want the holy water sprinkled, according to the last paragraph?
9. Does the priest know that the people believe differently about the holy water? If so, why does he go ahead and sprinkle it anyway?

Journal: If you could meet a famous person, who would it be and why?
Literature: Read "The Invalid's Story" by Mark Twain, pages 596-602. This is a comic story by one of America's funniest writers. When done, answer the questions in your own words and ideas on page 162, #1, 2, 3, 5, 6.
Grammar: Read page 272, "Introductory Elements", and do Exercise 8, page 272-273, #1-25. You don't have to write the whole sentence, just the words on either side of the comma. For example, on number one, you would write only "Now, this".

Journal: You can invite four people from history (alive or dead) to dinner for conversation. Who would you invite and why? Ex. Napoleon, Jesus, Hitler, etc.
Grammar: Read page 274, "Commas to Separate Elements in Dates and Addresses, Commas in salutations and closings".
Do Exercise 10, page 274, # 1-10. You will need to write out these sentences.
Literature: Read "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant. pp 608-615. Answer the questions below:
1. Why is Mathilde sad?
2. Why does she say she cannot go to the reception and dance?
3. What does her husband buy her so that she can go?
4. Why does she think she still can't go to the dance?
5. What do they get her to complete her outfit?
6. Who does she get it from?
7. What happens to the necklace? Where do they think they lost it?
8. What do they do so that they aren't caught having lost it?
9. How much does the necklace cost that they buy as a replacement?
10. How many years do they work to pay back the money needed to buy the necklace?
11. When Mathilde runs into the lady who lent her the necklace, why does the lady not recognize her?
12. What is the irony of the necklace? How much was the original really worth?
13. Do you think people that value material possessions too much are likely to face hardship in life? Why or why not?
